Nestled on the French Riviera between Nice and Cannes, the old town of Antibes borders the Mediterranean Sea and boasts a vibrant array of colors. These are particularly striking in the Safranier district: cream-colored facades are bordered by lush vegetation in a vast palette of pink, yellow, green, red, and purple. This part of old Antibes, enclosed by ramparts, offers lovely walks through quiet, shaded streets lined with Provençal shutters.
Continue this idyllic escape to the Cap d'Antibes and the small port of Olivette, where brightly colored fishing boats bob gently in the water, like a postcard from the French Riviera. Those feeling more energetic can lace up their hiking boots to explore the surrounding trails, starting with the famous Sentier des Douaniers (Customs Officers' Path), also known as the Tire-Poil, a 5-km-long path that stretches around the entire cape. A magnificent route awaits, offering breathtaking views of the myriad shades of blue bordering the rugged cliffs, accompanied by the song of cicadas and the delightful scent of the pine forest! After your exertions, nothing beats a swim in the crystal-clear sea: the Cap d'Antibes boasts remarkable beaches perfect for snorkeling. While bordered by long stretches of sand, they are teeming with rocks once you enter the water, creating a thriving marine ecosystem. Secluded coves are also nestled along the way.
If you feel like it, gain some altitude from Cap d'Antibes and climb up to the Garoupe lighthouse which offers an incredible panorama of major sites on the French Riviera such as Nice, Cannes, Juan-les-Pins and the Lérins Islands.
Continue your journey towards Antibes city center to discover some of its major cultural attractions. The Picasso Museum, housed within the majestic Grimaldi Castle, which boasts an immense stone facade overlooking the sea, contains some of the artist's major works: La Joie de Vivre, Satyre, and Faune were created in Antibes during the painter's stay there. Ceramics, sculptures, and paintings are displayed throughout this vast space, alongside other works of modern art. Be sure to visit the museum's terrace, where imposing contemporary sculptures in ebony tones dominate the coastline.
Just outside the old town lies the charming Vauban port with its pretty white boats. People come here especially for its excellent restaurants, which evoke the delicate flavors of neighboring Italy. And if you visit in the morning, be sure to stop by the Provençal market in Antibes, brimming with local produce perfect for a delicious seaside picnic!
